Chapter 15
Dawnâs heart fell in her chest. This was why the woman looked familiar to her. This woman had been with Alek last night when he had arrived home. Dawn felt as if she could not breath as she faced Racheal. She was his girlfriend?
It made no sense to Dawn. How could she be his girlfriend if she was new to the land? Alek had just gotten home after a five-year journey. Then there was the kiss she had shared with Alek. Why would he kiss Dawn like that if he had a girlfriend?
Racheal was looking at her expectantly, so Dawn said, âYes, I know Alek.â
She did not comment further, so Racheal said, âI was with him last night, but after he fed he ran off. He did not return home this morning, so I am returning to the human community for the day. I am lost, however, and was hoping you could tell me the way.â
So many questions ran through Dawnâs mind. She had stayed the whole night with Alek? Why did he run off? Why had he not returned home? Had something happened to him?
Dawn shook her head to clear it as she asked, âDo you not know where Alek went?â
Racheal lifted her chin arrogantly and said, âHe did not say where he was going. I will return to his house after sunset to see if he has returned.â
Dawn started to say that Alek was supposed to come here tonight, but she hesitated. This woman seemed easy to anger, and Dawn certainly did not want to anger her.
After a momentary pause, Dawn said, âAlek has a meeting with my father tonight in my village. He will probably be with my father all night.â Dawn made sure to say my father so as not to incur a wrath of jealousy from Racheal.
It seemed to have worked, because Racheal simply nodded her head and said, âFine I will wait until the next night, then.â Her look became friendlier as she asked, âIf he does not come, will you let me know? I am terribly worried about him.â
Dawn swallowed hard and answered, âSure. I will send word to you. If you keep walking south from here you will make it to the farm, and then to the human community.â Dawn pointed towards the south as she spoke.
Racheal actually smiled sweetly at Dawn and said, âThank you very much. I am in your debt.â She pulled a bag up over her shoulder and, with a friendly wave, walked in the direction Dawn had pointed.
Dawn walked back down the beach where Forest was jumping up and down excitedly and saying, âWell, what happened? Who was she? What did she want?â
Dawn did not answer, and plopped herself down on her towel. She looked out toward the beach where Sky had wandered off, and was already back in the water with his friends.
She sat there for a moment brooding until Forest said softly, âDawn, what happened?â Forest sat down beside Dawn and placed a hand on her knee.
